Sling Media, Inc. (founded in 2004)
and its signature product - Slingbox - are in their
infancy, but this technology is drawing the interest of
television aficionados of all kinds. By hooking a
Slingbox to a television, and synchronizing the Slingbox
device with any personal computer or laptop with
internet connectivity, your can control and watch that
television wherever your internet-connected computer or
laptop is - close to home or far away. The Slingbox
interacts with multiple audio-visual devices and is also
compatible with digital video recording devices like
TiVo. It may behoove Slingbox
users to set up the Slingbox on a lesser-used television
in the house, since, if the Slingbox signal is sent to a
specific television set, then that set could be
controlled by both the viewer at home and the remote
Slingbox user, thus creating a potential "remote war".
With an internet connection for his
PC or laptop, and ownership of a Slingbox, his TV is
where he wants it, when he wants it. Add a DVR
into the mix, and he can watch live or recorded
television programming. How much TV you want him to
watch is something you need to work out with him, but
you may find that giving him the opportunity to watch
his favorite shows and games while he's on the go (even
in the bathroom!) may actually create more non-TV time
with you. |
